The latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy put strains on some of our favorite couples. With a shocking revelation, and a sense of history repeating, ‘One Step Too Far’ didn’t disappoint. So lets dig in!

The episode started with Derek wanting Meredith to be back on neuro — something that didn’t end up so well last time. Clinical trials anyone? And even though Meredith opposed it, she found herself on Shepard’s latest case.  So, in the OR Dr. Shepard finds himself with both the Grey’s sisters, but has to go check on another patient. He leaves Meredith in charge and tells Lexi to remove the woman’s cyst, which she successfully does. The only problem, is the woman also has a tumor which they have clear access to then and there. Meredith decides that they should wait for Derek to come back, but in the end they remove the tumor themselves.

Safe to say Derek isn’t happy, and only gets angrier when post-op results show complications. After a disagreement about what to tell Lexi, Meredith is the one who breaks the news to Lexi and tells her to let Derek yell and learn from the experience. Back at home Meredith explains that this is why she definitely can’t come back to neuro. He wouldn’t even look at her. She asks him if she wants her to take his mind off it, he says no. She asked if he wanted her to go away, he said no to that too. Whew! So, it seems for now the crisis had been averted.

Two people definitely still in a crisis are Cristina and Owen. Their past decisions keep rearing their ugly heads. It’s also not helping that Cristina is still convinced that Owen is cheating on her with the nurse, who we learn is named Emily. And as luck would have it, Cristina and Emily are on the same case today. Awkward. The case revolves around a man, Sam aka Uncle Phi from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, having to take his husband off life support. Cristina, true to form isn’t very understanding, whereas Emily is extremely comforting.

Due to the genius that is Shonda Rhymes, their conversations all revolve around ‘losing a husband’ which is a topic all too close to Cristina’s heart at the moment. She ends up confronting Emily, bluntly telling her to stop screwing her husband. Emily denies it, but does admit to flirting and apologizes. Later that night, Owen comes home, late as usual, and Cristina tells him everything, including her suspicions about him cheating with Emily. He admits that he didn’t cheat on her with Emily and just as we all breathe a sigh of relief, he drops the bomb. He didn’t cheat on her with Emily…  but he did cheat. Not good, not good at all.

Not all was lost in the episode though, there were some happy moments, like Avery finally getting some. This was all thanks to mama Avery who returned to Seattle Grace with her assistant Mara. Avery was told to give Mara a tour of the hospital and eventually came to realize that this was a set up. He accused Mara of trying to seduce him but she explains that she’s more of a spy, trying to find out info to report back to his mother. So, Avery in turn teaches her how to stand up to mama Avery, and she in turn gives him some sex. Okay, so maybe she did end up seducing ‘em a bit. Sloan would be so proud.

Also feeling the power of seduction? The chief. And not from Adele. Mama Avery and Dr. Webber spend the day flirting over open bodies, and he ends up accepting her invitation to be her date for a function. In the end, it’s Dr. Bailey who gets through to the chief and even though she knows he would never do anything to hurt Adele again, she warns him that Mama Avery may have different intentions. So, he explains the situation to Mama Avery and that it was just nice to have a normal conversation and feel appreciated. He tells her he doesn’t trust himself going with her, and the two hug it out.

Karev also finds himself in an interesting situation. He’s been spending a lot of time with his intern Morgan whose baby is still fighting for his life. So much time that Cristina and Meredith worry he has another Rebecca on his hands, and Callie steps in to tell him that he may not be in love with Morgan, but she is definitely smitten with him. A theory that is confirmed when she pulls Karev into a picture with her and the baby. Well isn’t this just turning out to be one happy, not really a family, family.
