Revenge Epitaph

Revenge is back and we kicked things off with everyone, yes everyone, feeling the repercussions of Daniel’s death. So let’s dig in and say #GoodbyeDaniel!

We picked up right where we left off—the sound of gunshots coming from Grayson manor. As Emily is sitting still holding Daniel’s lifeless body and Jack is surveying the damage done, David enters the premises. Just as he begins to piece together what happened – and blames Emily- Victoria makes her way in and collapses with grief. As Victoria screams over her son, David screams at his daughter. He told her not to get involved, and she did an now look what happened. But Jack quickly reminds them that there isn’t time for that. If they don’t want Malcom Black coming for them, they’re going to have to act an act fast and this time: it’s Jack who has the plan.

We soon see Emily getting interrogated by the police about what happened that night. So what did happen in this new version of the truth? Daniel was drunk and yelling, banging on the door, looking to hurt Emily for all the pain she caused him. He was able to break in and Emily ran up the stairs where the two struggled and she fell of the balcony dislocating her shoulder. Because Emily is a badass she popped that sucker back in herself. Then, the detective asks Emily where she got the gun, but her answer contradicts a statement she gave before. It’s clear Emily is not on her A-game, but luckily for her the police are done questioning her (she did have an emotional night after all) and good news: she’s not going to jail. But there is someone who does have some questions: Margot.

Margot isn’t buying the story that Emily, David, the press, and a reluctant Victoria are selling. She knows how happy Daniel sounded when she spoke to him last. She knows he was ready to turn his life around and be a father. So if Victoria isn’t willing to come forward with the truth, Margot will make sure somebody hears it. So off to the police station she goes.

So back to Emily’s story, if you remember there was another key player in Grayson Manor that night: Kate a.k.a. Malcom’s daughter. So what happened to her? Nolan. And that’s really all I should have to say. He backdates some calls, ships her phone to Florida, and he and Jack head to the hotel room to erase any sign that Kate, Jack, and their sexy-time ever happened. However , it’s here that we finally see Jack come to terms with the fact that he not only killed someone, but he killed someone he cared about, or more plainly: another person that he cared about is dead. Sigh. Will Jack ever catch a break?

Back over at Grayson Manor, both Victoria and Emily are in their own personal hell; David has them staying under one roof for protection. While she’s there, Victoria is visited by Louise who is heartbroken over Daniel’s death and sees this as the perfect opportunity to console the mother-she-wish-she-had. Victoria, not completely blinded by her grief, and after hearing that Louise is staying with Nolan because she is in fact so broken up, gives her an assignment: retrieve a blue envelope. Little does she know that the envelope holds Emily’s true identity. Louise is ultimately able to get the envelope but Victoria tells her to burn it so nobody ends up dead. Of course we never see Louise actually throw out the envelope.

Elsewhere, Emily is ready for round two of questioning about the night of Daniel’s death. Jack catches her before she heads into the station and tells her to take some more time. He reminds her that she is not on her A-game, but Emily reminds him she is always ready to play. So as Ben tries to bait her with more discrepancies in her story, Emily steps up to the plate. When asked how Daniel didn’t have a scratch on him if this was all in self-defense, Emily tells him the truth: she didn’t want to hurt him. How underneath everything, there was a good person, a person a part of her did care about. So naturally, Ben wants to know then how she was able to shoot him if she cared so much about him. Her response: he tried to kill her first. On their wedding night. So what was to stop him from trying again? He told Emily the night of their wedding that she ruined his life, but it turns out he was wrong. It was only recently that she truly did. It was a truly moving scene and a way for Emily to feel the weight of Daniel’s death and honor his memory. It also didn’t help that she found out that Daniel was going to be a father.

Cut to a little while later when Margot arrives at Grayson Manor and Emily actually shows signs of genuine remorse. But Margot still says she knows the truth and she will make it her mission that the world knows it too. Emily may play all these games, but she makes it clear that she does not play. She does make it clear she’s ready to get her own revenge. First up on her list: forbidding Emily from going to the funeral. As Victoria gets ready for the funeral, she has a daydream of helping Daniel with his suit. The reality is, she’s picking out a suit to bury her son in.

The episode ended with the police Chief Alvarez getting a visit from yet another FBI agent. Earlier in the episode, Alvarez had followed David in his van, and after breaking his taillight, pulled him over so he had an excuse to search David’s car. He knew something wasn’t right with their stories (the night of Daniel’s death he left his keys in the trunk of the van) and frankly just doesn’t trust David at all. Luckily, David didn’t have the body in the car. Cut back to the Chief Alvarez and his visitor, Alvarez notices that the man doesn’t have the proper plates on his car. With that, we learn that this man is not an FBI agent, but was lying about that…just like his daughter. Ladies and gentleman, we have just met Malcom Black, and with that we’re ready for next week.

Some leftovers: Are you sad Daniel is really gone? What did you think of Emily’s speech to the police? What do you think it means that Malcom Black is already in the Hamptons? Do you think Louise threw out the envelope?
